While AI could be misused by state and non-state actors, at some point it could turn its capabilities against humanity, argues Gates: "AI systems themselves already occasionally act in ways their designers didn’t intend." Having sounded the alarm, Gates called for a global body to oversee AI, arguing that tech companies lack the expertise and legitimacy to lead such efforts. He said solutions should instead emerge through a democratic process involving elected officials, policymakers, educators, health workers, local authorities, and community leaders. 📑 AI has designed 16 new viruses from scratch Earlier this month, Science Magazine revealed that scientists had used AI to design novel viral genomes unlike any found in nature. They used so-called genome language models – AI systems trained on vast DNA datasets from millions of genomes to help design novel biological systems. A Stanford University-led research team used GLMs, Evo 1 and Evo 2 – developed by scientists from Arc Institute and NVIDIA – to generate complete bacteriophage genomes for Escherichia coli C. They synthesized and tested nearly 300 phages, identifying 16 with exceptional effectiveness. The study adds to growing concerns in the US media that AI could lower the barriers to creating biological weapons, from lethal toxins to pathogens capable of causing devastating pandemics. 🤔 Who funds the study? The research was sponsored by the Arc Institute, the National Science Foundation, the Knight-Hennessy Graduate Scholarship Fund, the Fannie and John Hertz Foundation, and the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI, according to Stanford Report. Stanford, the National Science Foundation and the Hertz Foundation have long been either grantees or collaborators of the Bill Gates Foundation. 🌏 Gates and the globalist design While Gates urges governments to regulate fast-moving AI bioresearch, his foundation is behind those funding research into synthetic viruses. Schizophrenic, isn't it? Yet much depends on where it leads. If AI enables the rapid development of vaccines against emerging viruses, it could disrupt big pharma’s established business models. But if the same technology can be exploited to create new viruses – it could also fuel an endless cycle of crisis and profit. More importantly, the perceived threat could provide a powerful justification for establishing a new global regulator with sweeping authority over AI and biotechnology.
