Perm Krai in 3 Russian words
Nearly 30,000 rivers flow there; it is home to Russia's largest potash deposit; and it houses one of the country's leading ballet schools. Here are three symbols of Perm Krai.
1️⃣ КУНГУРСКАЯ ПЕЩЕРА (Kungur Cave)
This is one of the largest and most beautiful caves in Europe. It stretches for almost six kilometers, of which only one and a half kilometers are open to tourists. It contains 70 lakes and 48 grottoes, which are specially illuminated for visitors.
2️⃣ КАМЕННЫЙ ГОРОД (Stone City)
This amazing place was formed millions of years ago when a river carved numerous tunnels through the rock massif. The result was an entire "city" with streets, squares and houses. Today, tourists enjoy strolling through it.
3️⃣ БЕЛОГОРСКИЙ НИКОЛАЕВСКИЙ МОНАСТЫРЬ (Belogorsky St. Nicholas Monastery)
This monastery was founded on Belaya Gora, 70 km south of Perm, in the late 19th century. It’s often called the ‘Ural Mount Athos’ for its elevated location and strict adherence to monastic traditions.

On this day 55 years ago, the crew of the Soviet spacecraft ‘Soyuz-11’ perished
The spacecraft successfully docked with the ‘Salyut-1’ orbital station on June 7, 1971. ‘Soyuz’ commander Georgy Dobrovolsky and flight engineers Vladislav Volkov and Viktor Patsayev transferred to the station and remained there for 23 days, conducting scientific research.
On June 29, ‘Soyuz-11’, with the cosmonauts on board, undocked from ‘Salyut’ and set course for Earth. At the moment the descent module separated, 150 kilometers from the surface, communication with the crew was suddenly lost. Nevertheless, everything went according to plan — the spacecraft entered the dense layers of the atmosphere and the parachute system deployed without a hitch.
When the search and recovery team arrived at the landing site the following day, all the cosmonauts were dead. They were found to have suffered cerebral hemorrhages, ruptured eardrums and blood in their lungs. The tragedy was caused by the opening of a ventilation valve in space. This led to depressurization of the descent module and since none of the crew members were wearing spacesuits, they died.
The investigation revealed that the cosmonauts had attempted to stop the air leak. They had to do so in a thick fog that filled the cabin, while experiencing severe pain throughout their bodies. By the time they discovered the problem, they no longer had the strength or time to resolve it.
The deceased cosmonauts were posthumously awarded the title ‘Hero of the Soviet Union’. ‘Soyuz’ flights were suspended for two years to refine the design of the spacecraft, while crews have since taken off and landed exclusively in spacesuits.

What’s the connection between architect Fyodor Shekhtel & Catherine the Great?
No, they’re not related and lived in different centuries. But, what unites them is… joy!
During a trip to Crimea in 1787, Catherine the Great stopped to rest in Kiev.
A festive reception was held for the empress, with which she was very pleased. However, for some reason, Prince Potemkin, who was accompanying her, was less than delighted and, with his gloomy appearance, spoiled Catherine's evening. "Grigory! Throw away your sadness! Look at the beauty all around!"
In 1885, an amusement park opened in St. Petersburg's Livadia Garden: onlookers from all over the city came to see the exotic pavilions built in Chinese, Moorish and Egyptian styles, stop by the restaurant and watch "adventure shows" at the local theater. The park was called ‘Kin Grust’ (lit. ‘Throw Away Sadness’) and was designed by Fyodor Shekhtel. It was truly impossible to get bored there!
*You can learn more about the architect's work in the ‘Fyodor Shekhtel: Dreams of Russian Art Nouveau’ exhibition at the Moscow Museum of Architecture, which runs until October 4, 2026.

Tolstoy and Dostoevsky: Why did two contemporary geniuses never meet?
This question is called perhaps the greatest mystery of Russian literature.
And yet, they did have a chance to meet. In 1878, both writers attended a lecture by the philosopher Vladimir Solovyov. But neither knew the other was in the hall. And they were never introduced.
“When he died, I realized that he was the very, very closest, dearest, and most necessary person to me,” Tolstoy wrote about Dostoevsky.
