#AMERICAN #SPELLING 🇺🇸 AMERICAN SPELLING is different from 🇬🇧 BRITISH SPELLING in a number of ways. This is because at the time of the US Declaration of Independence on 4th July 1776, there was no unified standard of spelling, so both countries developed their own, different standards. Words ending in -our 🇬🇧 are -or 🇺🇸: 🇬🇧 Red is the colour of Labour. 🇺🇸 I asked her a fovor with good humor. Words ending in -re 🇬🇧 are -er 🇺🇸: 🇬🇧 It’s twelve kilometres from the centre. 🇺🇸 The theater costumes are of natural fibre. Words ending in -ise 🇬🇧 are -ize 🇺🇸: 🇬🇧 Let’s organise, not philosophise! 🇺🇸 They digitized and analyzed the information. Double consonants before -ing, -ed or -er in 🇬🇧 are single in 🇺🇸: 🇬🇧 He’s modelling the latest collection. 🇺🇸 She traveled alone to Europe.

/r/ SOUNDS In 🇬🇧 British English, we only pronounce the /r/ sound if it comes at the beginning of a syllable. If it comes at the end, the 'r' just extends the vowel. EXAMPLES: 🦮 BARK - 🇬🇧 [bɑːk] 🇺🇸 [bɑrk] 🦜 BIRD - 🇬🇧 [bɜːd] 🇺🇸 [bɜrd]

#AMERICAN #DIALECTS 🇺🇸 AMERICAN ENGLISH has its own internal variations. Here are some ways different parts of the US are different. ‘Howdy!’ is a greeting most commonly heard in Texas. In Southern US states, Y’’all is the second person plural pronoun: • Y’all be good now while mama’s gone! Also in the Southern US, ‘bless you heart’ means ‘I feel sorry for you’ it’s sometimes used sarcastically: • You’ve lost your car keys? Well bless your heart! The adverb ‘hella’ means ‘very’ in some parts of Californnia: • They’ve been hella foolish not to prepare! The adverb ‘liketa’ means ‘almost’ in central parts of the US: • He liketa died of shock! 🫑 This is known as a ‘pepper’, ‘chili’ or even a ‘mango’ in different pats of the US
